  • SC to hear Nagaland women quota petition tomorrow

    nagawomenA Special Leave Petition (SLP) on women’s quota in local civic bodies filed by Naga women organizations through the two petitioners has been listed for hearing on Tuesday in the Supreme Court before chief justice Altamas Kabir.

    In a press release, Joint Action Committee on Women Reservation (JACWR) said the Nagaland Government in response to the latest notice served on it had sought the dismissal of the SLP while the state election commission had also responded to the notice served by the Apex Court.

    The crucial election matter on Nagaland has been listed as item No 2 and Naga women awaited justice for their constitutional right from the Apex Court, said the press release.

    The JACWR informed that Supreme Court senior advocate and well known human rights lawyer Colin Gonsalves, who is also Director of Human Rights Law Network (HRLN), New Delhi will represent Naga women along with his team of lawyers from the HRLN.

    It also expressed deep gratitude to all the women organizations and individuals, friends and family who had encouraged and supported the legal fight for gender justice.

    Joint Action Committee on Women Reservation said it was indebted to women organizations , well wishers, friends and family including unnamed generous benefactors, both in the state and outside, who have donated towards all expenses for the 17 court hearings, including travels of lawyers and women leaders to Kohima, Guwahati and New Delhi till date.
