In a big Jolt for Narendra Modi government, the Supreme Court on Wednesday rejected Gujarat government’s plea challenging appointment of retired judge R A Mehta as state Lokayukta.
The state government in its plea had challenged unilateral appointment by Governor Kamla Beniwal without consulting the government.
The apex court observed that Governor is bound to act under advice of Council of Ministers but appointment is right as it was done in
consultation with Gujarat High Couirt Chief Justice.
The governor had on 25th August, 2011 appointed Justice Mehta to the post as Lokayukta, which had been lying vacant for the last eight years.
