    Published on December 28, 2010

In Andhra Pradesh, the Congress MPs and Legislators from Telangana region have called off their hunger strike following the State Government announced in principle acceptance to withdraw the cases against students.

State Home Minister Sabitha Indra Reddy has handed over a letter to Congress Working Committee Member K Kesava Rao to this affect in Hyderabad. The fasting congress leaders have called off their stir on the request made by a group of ministers as the government agreed to fulfil their demand.

Demanding the state Government to withdraw all the cases registered against students during agitations last year, as assured by the union Home Minister P Chidambaram, the congress MPs and Legislators from Telangana region have been on indefinite hunger strike since Monday. Led by Congress Working Committee member K Kesava Rao, the fasting leaders were unrelenting when the state government appealed to them to call off the stir and announced withdrawal of 135 more cases involving about 850 persons yesterday.

The state Government had already lifted off 565 cases providing relief to over 2400 persons and assured during the last assembly session that the remaining simple cases would be considered to withdraw in phases. However, the Government has reviewed the situation after the Congress elected members launched the agitation and conveyed it’s in principle acceptance to withdraw all cases.

In a statement, the Government said the students and others who participated in Telangana statehood and Unified state agitations should not suffer due to the acts committed in movements due to momentary emotional stress, anger and anguish.
