In Gujarat, the police have been put on alert in Ahmedabad, Godhra and Vadodara in view of a special court’s verdict on the 2002 Godhra train carnage case today. The judgment on the Godhra train carnage case that triggered massive communal riots in Gujarat in 2002 will be pronounced today. Designated Judge P R Patel who completed hearing September last year has postponed the pronouncement of judgment on the sensitive case to February 22. After completion of the hearing, in September last year, the pronouncement could not happen, as there was a Supreme Court stay on the pronouncement of judgment. This stay was lifted on 26th October 2010.

AIR Ahmedabad Correspondent reports that the trial was conducted inside the Sabarmati Central jail of Ahmedabad against 94 accused. It began in June 2009 with the framing of the charges against the accused who have been in Sabarmati jail since 2002. All the accused in the case have been charged for criminal conspiracy and murder for burning the S-6 coach of the Sabarmati Express train near Godhra railway station on February 27, 2002 in which 58 people were killed.
