  • Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal filed his nomination from Majuli constituency, facing major challenge of Congress leader and former minister Rajiv Lochan Pegu.

    GUWAHATI : Political saragaradhamaia are intensifying in the assembly elections in four states and one Union territory. All political parties are engaged in election campaigning. In Assam, the dates of assembly elections are coming to a close day. The parties have also started completing the electoral processes. In the same episode, BJP leader and Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today (March 9, 2021) made his nomination from Majuli seat. He was accompanied by state Health Minister Hemant Biswa Sharma.

    He submitted his nomination to the returning officer of Majuli district. He won the seat last time by 18,923 votes. Sarbananda Sonowal will face the challenge of Congress leader and former minister Rajiv Lochan Pegu. The Congress has fielded the election from Majuli seat. Recently, the Congress had released a list of its 40 candidates. In this list, Pegu has been described as a candidate from Majuli seat. Several BJP and Congress candidates also filed their nominations for the first and second phase of elections.

    The North Eastern Region’s development minister Jitendra Singh, BJP’s Assam-in-charge Bijant Panda, Assam Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and BJP chief Ranjit Das of Assam state joined a massive procession along with top BJP leader Sarbananda Sonowal. Other leaders of BJP’s coalition partners-AGP and UPPL were also present at the roadshow. Let us say that 126 assembly constituencies in Assam are to be held in three phases. The term of the 126-seat Assam Assembly expires on 31st May. In the 2016 assembly elections, the BJP overthrew the ruling Congress regime in the state for 15 years. In the 2016 elections, BJP got 86 seats and Sarbananda Sonowal became the chief Minister of the state.
