Kokrajhar: The Assam State Commission for Women (ASWC) have expressed serious concern over the unabated and rampant incidents of crimes against women and young girls in Lower Assam Kokrajhar and Chirang district.

A four member team from the ASWC led by Chairperson Chikimiki Talukdar, along with three members- Kabita Basumatary, Niyati Dey and Dhira Talukdar today visited Kokrajhar   and Chirang in lower Assam and took stock of the prevailing situation.

In Kokrajhar the team meet senior officials of the civil and police administration at Kokrajhar Circuit House and discussed on the present situation. The team also interacted with members of civil society, conscious citizens, and the Child Welfare Committee Kokrajhar. The team also visited and meet the victims.

Talking to Reporters, Assam State Women Commission Chairperson Chikimiki Talukdar said the Assam State Commission for Women is very much concerned over series of attacked on women and young girls  in Kokrajhar since the last few months, which now has also spread to neighbouring Chirang district and the commission have taken the matter very seriously.

“It is a matter of serious concern that the crime against women is on rise and there is report of series of incidents of attack on women, especially young girls in Kokrajhar since the last 2-3 months, which has now spread to Chirang district also, she said.

The Assam State Women Commission Chairperson said the administration and the police need to be more vigil and ensure full proof security and safety of women and girls.  She also urged the common public to be alert and thwart the motive of the anti-social elements in the society.

Kokrajhar district, including in Kokrajhar town have witnessed series of such incidents targeting women and girls since August last.  An organized group of criminal has been creating terrors in the mind of women and girls. The criminal forcefully enters the living space and using sprays makes the victim unconsciousness, in some cases the miscreants outrage the modesty of women including rape and molestation and in some instances even films the act of sexual violence and release it in social media. The residents, especially women and girls are having sleepless night.
