    Published on December 18, 2012

Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said in the Rajya Sabha today that Sunday’s rape incident in Delhi will be tried by a Fast Track court.

The hearing will be on a day-to-day basis to facilitate a quick trial and punishment of the culprits. Replying to a three-hour discussion, he said the Delhi Police has arrested four persons in this connection and the other two culprits will be nabbed very soon.

Mr. Shinde assured the House that he will hold a detailed review for making Delhi safer for women. He warned that strict action will be taken against those police personnel who failed in their duty to protect the victim. The Home Minister informed the members that a Bill to amend the Criminal Law has been introduced in the Lok Sabha to facilitate swift convictions in rape cases.

Earlier, members cutting across party lines demanded exemplary punishment for perpetrators of rape so as to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.

The matter also figured in the Lok Sabha with Members strongly condemning the incident. Speaker Meira Kumar termed it a heinous crime. The matter figured during the Zero Hour, when Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj demanded death sentence for the perpetrators of the Delhi incident. Expressing anguish, Congress leader Girija Vyas called for amending the Indian Penal Code, IPC, relating to rape and demanded the setting up of fast track courts to deal with rape cases.
