  • Flood situation in Assam grim; relief and rescue measures intensified

    The Assam government has intensified relief and rescue measures as over 14 lakh people are reeling under the fury of floods.

    Talking to newspersons in Guwahati, Additional Chief Secretary of Home and Disaster Management, Kumar Sanjay Krishna said there was no dearth of funds in helping the affected people.

    He said the government is monitoring the situation and providing all help as per norms. Mr. Krishna said that 8 persons have lost their lives due to floods and landslides.

    NDRF and SDRF teams have been pressed into search and rescue measures. He also said that 70 per cent areas of the Kaziranga National Park are submerged but the Forest Department is taking all steps to prevent poaching of animals.

    He said that wild animals moved to high land areas. He also said that there was no shortage of food material in the state.

    AIR correspondent reports that several rivers, including the Brahmaputra, are flowing above the danger mark at several places, including in Guwahati.

    Twenty-thousand people are taking shelter at 62 temporary relief camps. Rice, drinking water, dal, salt, mustard oil, baby foods and medicines are being distributed by the administration.
