  • Nation pays tribute to Chandra Shekhar Azad on his 110th birth anniversary

    New Delhi: On the occasion of 110th birth anniversary of Chandra Shekhar Azad on Saturday, people from all walks of life are paying tribute to him at Chandra Shekhar Azad park in Allahabad where he sacrificed his life for the cause of freedom.

    The historic park was earlier known as Alfred Park. Revolutionary freedom fighter Azad was born on this day in 1906 and was a close associate of Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh.

    The Uttar Pradesh armed police presented guard of honour and 21 one gun fire salute to the great freedom fighter.

    Police band also played national anthem and other patriotic song tunes to mark the occasion.

    Besides several veteran freedom fighters, political leaders, large number of school children and citizens organisations paid floral tributes.

    BJP MP Shyama Charan Gupta, High Court judge Justice Arun Tandon, district administrative authorities also paid tribute on this occasion.

    School children from different schools in the city presented cultural programmes to mark his birth anniversary.

    Several other programmes are being organised in the state on Saturday.

    India post department is releasing a special first day cover on Chandra Shekhar Azad at the same historic park this evening.

    At the age of 24 years, revolutionary martyr Chandra Azad sacrificed his life at the same Alfred park.

    Azad  shot himself when he was cornered by British police. Azad was born in Bhavra village in Jhabua district of Madhya Pradesh. Though his family was native of Unnao district of Uttar Pradesh.
