Notification issued for panchayat polls in Punjab

The process to elect 145 Panchayat Samitis and 22 Zila Parishads in Punjab got underway on Friday with the state Election Commission issuing a notification in this regard.
With the issuance of notification, the Model Code of Conduct came into force and would remain effective till 23rd May, an official spokesperson of the State Election Commission said in Chandigarh on Friday.
He said the process of filing of nomination started from Friday and would continue till 7th May.
Scrutiny of the papers would be done on 8th May and papers could be withdrawn till 9th May.
Voting would be conducted on 19th May and counting of votes would be done on 21st May, results would be declared the same day.
The Election process would be completed on 23rd May.
The spokesperson clarified that the Model Code of Conduct would be applicable only in the villages which directly come under the revenue jurisdiction of concerned Panchayat Smitis and Zila Parishads.
