    Published on September 9, 2020

An eight-year-old girl shot in the back was among 10 people killed in gunfire over the weekend in Chicago, police said Yesterday, marking the latest deadly holiday weekend in the America’s third-largest city. More than 50 people were shot from Friday until just before Tuesday midnight during a year where violent crime has soared in Chicago and other big US cities.

Police said the child was not the intended target and it is the sixth child to be killed in Chicago since late June. Overall, violent crime has spiked this year in Chicago, a trend that’s been mirrored in New York, Philadelphia and elsewhere. Experts point to multiple reasons, including soaring unemployment, and the pandemic. The city has reported 524 murders including the killing of 10 Police Officers so far this year, according to a department report.
