  • Govt collects Rs 73.73 cr as penalty from new telecom operators

    The government has collected 73.73 crore rupees as penalty from new telecom operators for missing the network roll-out deadline. But, it is still keeping open the option of cancelling the licences. Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal told reporters in New Delhi that the total penalty is about 219 crore rupees for missing roll-out obligations. The government has generated demand for over 78 crore rupees and out of this 73.73 crores have been realised.

    Etisalat DB, Loop Telecom, Uninor, Sistema-Shyam and Aircel are among the operators who have submitted the penalty. The minister said, that more notices are going to operators.

    Asked whether the matter will end with the payment of penalty or thier licences could still be cancelled, Sibal said a decision will be taken after due consideration.
